Zoe Steele - Information
Zoe’s practice surrounds themes of nostalgia, familiarity, comfort, childhood recollection and preserving/ recalling forgotten history. She is interested in the falsification of memory, the credibility of your childhood thoughts, and the idea that everything is fiction, both painting and photography, nothing is real and everything can be fabricated. Her work is primarily oil paintings; using glazing as a way of replicating the effects produced from classical dark room processes, giving a subtle nod back to the source of her work which is photography. Photography has played a large part in evoking a sense of nostalgia within her practice, however without being able to go back in time to capture a certain aesthetic she partially relies on sourcing existing imagery. Although, when she has the ability to revisit locations in which she deems influential within her life time, she strives to document them through her own composed photographs. Audience engagement is a fundamental aspect of Zoe’s practice, therefore she aims to source imagery that is thought provoking and prevails an uncanny feeling, for not only herself but emotionally stimulating for her audience.
